What is a CFI Code

A CFI code (Classification of Financial Instruments) is an international standard (ISO 10962) used to classify financial instruments.

It is widely used by exchanges, regulators, and professional terminals to formally describe the type and structure of a financial instrument.

On TradingView, the CFI code is shown as a classifier to help you understand the formal classification of a symbol and use it in Screeners.

How a CFI Code is Structured

A CFI code consists of 6 letters.

Each position represents a specific characteristic of the instrument.

PositionWhat it Represents
1Category (e.g., equity, debt, fund)
2Group (e.g., common share, bond, ETF)
3Attribute 1
4Attribute 2
5Attribute 3
6Attribute 4

If certain characteristics are not specified, the letter “X” may be used.
